Louis is a Toyota Landcruiser 78 Series, colloquially known as a troopcarrier or troopy. They were first produced in 1984 and aside from an engine and bonnet upgrade to comply with emissions and safety standards, the addition of 2 airbags and the odd electronic safety system they are mostly unchanged from the original design. They are used worldwide by NGOs, farmers and anyone who needs a truely tough vehicle and as such, their largest market (and Toyota’s testing ground) is in Australia.

We bought Louis with a firm idea in mind. We wanted to make him simple and utilitarian for living on the road. We found a few companies that convert them (and Landrover Defenders) into campers with a pop roof and a bed where the roof used to be. The bed pushes up so you can then have headroom to stand and live in the back.
